The Helly Hansen Verglas jacket was designed to provide superior protection and comfort for outdoor events such as skiing and mountain climbing in extreme temperatures. The jacket is geared toward a winter use and is not intended for wearing all year round.
Sizing and Features
The jacket allows for room to wear a heavier type of mid-layer. However, the thicker fabric can tend to make the jacket feel stiff. The jacket features four pockets, two above the waist and two on the chest area. The chest pockets allow for easy access even with the addition of a pack waist.
In addition the pockets have enough room to fit a pair of gloves or a packed lunch such as a sandwich. The pocket sizes are not large enough to hold skins but the hand pockets add an extra benefit of keeping the hands warm in icy temperatures.
The attached powder skirt is a useful feature when skiing in or walking through waist deep snow. The feature can easily be removed; however, the skirt does not add any interference on days where the feature may not be needed. The zippers on the jacket have been well sealed and the long pit zips allow for a good airflow when hiking in the jacket.
Other features of the Helly Hansen Verglas jacketinclude an hood that will very easily accommodate a climbing or ski helmet. While the chin zips offer protection from icy winds and snow.
The professional line is constructed out of 3ply laminate fabric and the performance line made from layer fabric. Both these lines feature DWR treatments as well as completely sealed up seams. The thicker material can contribute to a bulkier and heavier feel that could be a challenge for some individuals on longer hiking tours.
The benefit of the thicker material adds in a superior warmth factor and protection from the wind. The jacket can easily add enough warmth in temperatures that drop below 20 degrees. However, temperatures above 45 degrees could make the Helly Hansen Verglas jacket a bit too warm for comfort.
The weight and warmth of the jacket would not be recommended for summer, even as a protection from the rain. The jacket is, however an ideal choice for cold days in backcountry surroundings and ski resorts. Making the jacket a much needed accessory not to be missed in the winter months.
The pit vents in the jacket are extra long and designed to allow some type of airflow. However, this hardshell may not offer increased breathability the warmth of the jacket makes up for this small downfall.
The exterior material of the jacket offers superior waterproofing features and any precipitation will easily bead off without soaking into the jacket. The superior waterproofing benefits allow for a dry wear in the wettest of conditions.
The fantastic durability of the jacket allows for abrasive and rigorous use without tearing or splitting the material. In addition spills and stains are easily removed while offering an appealing and stylish appearance.

This met and exceeded all of my expectations. Well worth the money. Good zippers, quality material, great fit, I would recommend this to anyone who demands a great product.
The Helly Hansen Verglas jacket is a well constructed, tough winter hardshell. The warmth factor of the jacket can mean a great option for icy weather that can reach less than 20 degrees for outbound, inbound skiing and hiking expeditions.
The packability and weight of the jacket may be something to consider when searching for a lighter weight option. However, the jacket is ideal for resort riding, shorter types of Backcountry tours when the conditions are windy, wet and cold.
